The Craziest New Dating Apps

Remember the days when dating was just that… dating? You met someone you liked, and you went out. Life was simple. Those were good days.

But those days are long gone. Even the days of regular old online dating are fading into the background. Nowadays, singles in their 20s and 30s are turning to a new matchmaker: their smart phone. These two new dating apps have been dubbed crazy and controversial. What do you think?

Charm enables users to browse and share three -10 second videos. Their tagline is, “Because you’re so much more than a profile picture!”. It allows users to watch videos of potential matches and then rate ‘yes’ or ‘no’. It seems clever enough, but several news outlets, including Huffington Post and New York Mag, have already panned it, calling it “way too much effort” and “mortifying”.

I personally think this really takes out the ‘organic’ feel of meeting someone. Sure, online dating isn’t exactly the most natural way of connecting with another person, but there’s still that wonderful anticipation of seeing them in person, hearing their voice, noting their mannerisms. I think Charm is too focused on speed and instant gratification, as the words “real people, real fast” are splashed across the screen. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking it slow.

Carrot Dating was founded by MIT grad Brandon Wade, Carrot Dating is an app that allows you to bribe someone to go on a date with you. Yes, you read that correctly, and no, I’m not kidding. There are five kinds of ‘bribes’: Dining, Entertainment, Gifts, Activities, and Popular. In order to communicate, men and women are first required to choose a bribe. Once it’s been accepted, both users are then directed to a “Conversation” page where they can schedule both the bribery exchange/first date.

Hmm. If you ask me, this kind of takes the romance out of the equation, which I thought was part of the point of dating in the first place. But what do I know?

Various news outlets, including Business Insider and CNN, have called this app “sexist”, “crass”, and “basically prostitution”. No argument here.

(FYI: Wade is also the founder of several other romance sites, including: SeekingArrangement.com – the leading sugar daddy dating website, SeekingMillionaire.com – a millionaire matchmaking website, WhatsYourPrice.com – where singles bid for first dates, and MissTravel.com – the first travel dating website.)
